Well, that didn’t take long…
You’re inside my head…
Dear Idiots,
I have made my living helping to create audio-visiual content. I’ve produced shows for Prime-Time Network television, as well as cable, indy films, etc. I’ve even written software to help the production process.
I have now completely given up on the “Hollywood Establishment.” You don’t get it. Here’s why…
A couple of hours ago I went to my local electronics store, prepared to spend several thousand dollars to upgrade from SD to HD in my home. I had done research on tvs, and made my decision on a Sony 1080p set. I knew I would have to upgrade my DirecTV service to HD, too. Fine. It was another cost of the upgrade, and I was prepared for it. I also knew that I would have to upgrade my TiVo to record in HD. Again, another cost of the upgrade.
Everyone – Hollywood, politicians, and sales people – keeps pushing that video in the U.S. will be HD in 2009, and my old sets won’t work. It’s time to upgrade. I realize that…and I was prepared to do so, speaking with my wallet. I bought in.
But, when I went to make my final purchase, I was informed that DirecTV and TiVo wouldn’t work together. I would have to ditch TiVo and go with DirecTV’s DVR solution. That was the last straw. I left the store.
I came home, and called DirecTV to confirm what the salesperson had told me (because, well, sometimes they don’t know what they’re talking about.). Surprisingly, the DirecTV representative confirmed what I had been told. DirecTV HD will only work with a DirecTV DVR. In other words, “No TiVo for you!”
So to the HD pushers I say this: SCREW IT! You have proven to me why I don’t want to upgrade to HD…because you take control of my viewing experience. You want lock me out, expire my recorded videos, etc. Free markets be damned.
You’re forcing me to upgrade to what amounts to a gold-plated toilet. I don’t need a gold-plated toilet, nor do I want one. I’ve decided I’m not going to upgrade to HD. You’ve lost a customer, and you did it to yourself.
So, Mr. Mark Cuban,
I don’t care about high-definition video. Case in point, South Park will be just as funny on my computer, my cell phone, or wherever I choose to watch it. The resolution just doesn’t matter. It’s about the content.
Don’t get me wrong. I think HD is beautiful, escpecially when viewed side-by-side with SD. But, in the end it’s about the content.
And…if I lose my sports, then I lose my sports. I used to be a huge basketball fan. Then the strike hit, and I stopped watching. You know what? I never went back, and I don’t miss it a bit.
In 2009, when my TV goes kaput, I’ll simply login to iTunes, Amazon, FireAnt, or whoever “gets it” at the time, and download my video. I’ll then watch it on my 50″ monitor attached to my computer. If the content is HD, great. If not, fine. I don’t really care.
Utimately, here’s what I want: good content. Give me good content, and I’ll watch it. I don’t care if it’s SD, HD, Black and White, Animated, or otherwise. If it’s good content, I’ll even pay you for it. Or, I’ll watch commercials. Heck, I might even do both (I do now…kind of…if you consider that I pay a monthly bill for my tv service.)
So, um, yeah. I’m not buying into the HD hype. Keep it. I don’t want it.
Sincerely,
A loyal viewer, until 2009.
